There are eight parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. The part of speech indicates how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically within the sentence. An individual word can function as more than one part of speech when used in different circumstances. Understanding parts of speech is essential for determining the correct definition of a word when using the dictionary.

A noun is naming word. It can be the name of a person, place or thing. There are several types of nouns; Proper nouns, Common nouns, Singular nouns, Plural nouns, Collective nouns, Countable nouns, Uncountable nouns.

A pronoun is a word that takes place of a noun. Pronouns are short words we swap in for other nouns to make our writing and speech faster and more varied. There are 6 types of pronouns; Personal pronouns, Reflexive pronouns, Indefinite pronouns, Relative pronouns, Possessive pronouns and Demonstrative pronouns.

A verb tells what action someone or something is doing. It also expresses state of being.

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It "describes" or "modifies" a noun (The grey bungalow is huge). In these examples, the adjective is in bold and the noun that it modifies is in italics.

Prepositions: Prepositions connect words in a sentence. The words being connected are usually nouns or pronouns or phrases:
1. Prepositions of (P)lace
2. Prepositions of (T)ime
3. Prepositions of (D)irection

Conjunctions: Conjunction is a word that connects or joins clauses, words, phrases together in a sentence. Conjunctions are used to coordinate words in a sentence.

Adverbs: An adverb is a word that tells us more about a verb. An adverb modifies a verb. Adverbs often end in –ly
